Jewels of Asia: from India, China and South-East Asia
Susan Ollemans, known for her collections of Mughal jewellery, returns to the
Altfield Gallery with a new collection of jewels from
China, India and South East Asia.
The exhibition is in three parts.
First, from India we see a large group of glittering
enamelled pieces from the 17th to 19th century courts
of the Mughal Princes, including a pair of 18th century
diamond Kada (bracelets) featuring a pair of entwined
elephant heads with pink enamel decoration.
From India’s south, the exquisite workmanship of Tamil goldsmiths is highlighted
in a finely worked collar of heavy repoussé work designed expressly for the
decoration of deities.
The next group, from China, starts during the Liao period with a pair of
exquisite white jade birds set on gold strips, which would have been worn in
the hair. Jade examples of belt buckles, bangles and rings from the Ming and
Qing periods enhance the display, including a fine pair of silver-gilt dragons
carrying grey pearls.
Finally, from South-East Asia, mostly Java and Bali, come wonderful bold
gold pieces dating from the ninth century Sono Period to the Majapahit period.
